Arundhati Roy trained as an architect and wrote screenplays before her debut novel The God of Small Things won the 1997 Booker Prize and sold millions worldwide. She then largely set fiction aside for two decades of fierce political essays on Indian democracy, capitalism, and empire, returning to the novel only in 2017.
