Daphne du Maurier was the Cornish-loving British novelist who perfected the modern gothic — psychological suspense wrapped in atmosphere and dread. Rebecca (1938) has never gone out of print, inspired Hitchcock, and taught generations of thriller writers how a dead woman can dominate a book she never appears in.
