Douglas Adams turned a BBC radio serial into The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy — a 'trilogy in five parts' that gave the culture 42, Don't Panic, and Towel Day, still observed every May 25. A Cambridge Footlights alum, early Apple evangelist, and legendary deadline-misser ('I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by'), he died at 49 with the galaxy still laughing.
