Franz Kafka
Czech · b. 1883
Franz Kafka worked a day job at an insurance office in Prague and wrote at night, publishing almost nothing and instructing his friend Max Brod to burn his manuscripts after his death from tuberculosis at 40. Brod refused, and The Trial, The Castle, and The Metamorphosis made 'Kafkaesque' a word for the nightmare logic of modern bureaucracy and alienation.
