George Orwell — born Eric Blair — was an imperial policeman in Burma, a dishwasher in Paris, and a wounded veteran of the Spanish Civil War before becoming the century's conscience in prose. Animal Farm and 1984, written as he was dying of tuberculosis, gave the world its permanent vocabulary for tyranny: Big Brother, doublethink, thoughtcrime.
