Nathaniel Hawthorne

American · b. 1804

Nathaniel Hawthorne, a descendant of a judge in the Salem witch trials, spent his career probing Puritan guilt and hypocrisy in dark, allegorical fiction. The Scarlet Letter (1850) established the American novel as a serious moral art form and remains one of the most taught works in the country's literary canon.
