Susanna Clarke is a British author whose debut Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, a vast alternate-history fantasy, won the Hugo Award and took a decade to write. After years of chronic illness she returned with the slender, luminous Piranesi, which won the Women's Prize for Fiction in 2021.
