Toni Morrison edited Black literature into American publishing by day and wrote her own masterpieces before dawn, raising two sons alone. Beloved — built from a newspaper clipping about Margaret Garner — won the Pulitzer, and the 1993 Nobel made her the first Black woman laureate. Her project never wavered: the interior lives history's records left out.
