Viet Thanh Nguyen came to the United States as a refugee from Vietnam and became a professor and novelist whose debut The Sympathizer won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. His darkly comic, politically fierce work reexamines the Vietnam War from perspectives American culture had long ignored; the novel became an HBO series.
