Vladimir Nabokov fled the Russian Revolution, wrote his first nine novels in Russian, then reinvented himself in dazzling English and became a Cornell professor and passionate lepidopterist. Lolita made him famous and rich enough to write full-time; he composed on index cards and considered great fiction a matter of enchantment, not message.
