Arthur Golden
American · b. 1956
Arthur Golden — Harvard and Columbia-trained Japanologist from the Ochs-Sulzberger newspaper family — rewrote Memoirs of a Geisha three times over ten years, switching to first person after interviewing retired geisha Mineko Iwasaki. The novel spent 58 weeks on the NYT list; Iwasaki's lawsuit and corrective memoir became part of its story, and of publishing's ethics syllabus.
