Isabel Allende is the most widely read Spanish-language author alive, a Chilean novelist whose debut The House of the Spirits began as a farewell letter to her dying grandfather. A niece of assassinated president Salvador Allende, she fled the 1973 coup into exile; her magical-realist family sagas have sold more than 70 million copies worldwide.
