Joseph Conrad was a Polish-born sailor who learned English as his third language and became one of its greatest prose stylists, drawing on twenty years at sea. Heart of Darkness, his novella of a Congo journey, is among the most analyzed and debated works in English, indicting colonialism even as later readers have interrogated its own blind spots.
