Ken Kesey wrote One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest from his night shifts in a veterans' psychiatric ward and his volunteer stint in government LSD trials — experience that made the ward a metaphor for a conformist America. A bridge between the Beats and the hippies, he then largely abandoned novels for the road with his Merry Pranksters.
