Margaret Mitchell

Margaret Mitchell was an Atlanta journalist recovering from an ankle injury when she spent a decade typing Gone with the Wind in her apartment, hiding chapters in envelopes. Published in 1936, it sold a million Depression copies in six months, won the Pulitzer, and remained her only novel; she died in 1949, struck by a speeding cab blocks from where she wrote it.
