Mary Shelley

British · b. 1797

Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein at eighteen, conceived in a ghost-story contest on Lake Geneva during the volcanic 'year without a summer' — inventing science fiction while eloped with a married poet and already grieving a child. Widowed at 24 when Percy drowned, she edited his legacy and wrote five more novels, but the teenager's monster outlived everything.
