Maya Angelou was a streetcar conductor, calypso singer, and civil-rights organizer for King and Malcolm before a dinner-party dare from James Baldwin produced I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings — the book that made poetic autobiography a Black woman's instrument. Six more volumes, a presidential inauguration poem, and the Medal of Freedom followed; the voice never dropped a note.
