Mikhail Bulgakov
Russian · b. 1891
Mikhail Bulgakov trained as a doctor, then wrote plays and fiction that Stalin's censors suppressed, burning his own manuscript of The Master and Margarita in despair before rewriting it. He died in 1940 having never seen it published; it appeared, censored, only in 1966, and is now regarded as the great novel of the Soviet century.
