Ralph Ellison trained as a musician before Invisible Man (1952) won the National Book Award and became a landmark of American literature, dissecting Black invisibility with modernist daring. He spent the remaining four decades of his life on a second novel he never finished; the unfinished manuscript ran to thousands of pages.
