Hinton started The Outsiders at fifteen, furious that a friend was beaten for walking home, and published it at eighteen — her publisher suggesting initials so boys wouldn't dismiss a girl's gang novel. It invented young-adult fiction, sold 15+ million copies, and made her, per the ALA, the founding author of the genre before she could vote.
