William Golding

William Golding was a schoolteacher who had watched ordinary men at war before he wrote Lord of the Flies — his answer to the boys'-adventure stories that pretended civilization was skin-deep in the good way. Rejected by 21 publishers, it became a set text worldwide and won him the 1983 Nobel Prize in Literature.
