The story and the impact

Robert Pool is an American science writer who trained in mathematics, earning a doctorate from Rice University, before turning to journalism. He wrote for the journals Science and Nature, covering research across many fields and learning to explain demanding work to readers outside it.

His books follow that same instinct to bring research to a general audience. In «Eve's Rib» (1994) he examined the scientific debate over the biological roots of sex differences. In «Beyond Engineering: How Society Shapes Technology» (1997) he argued that technologies are shaped by social, political and economic forces as much as by engineering logic.

In 2016 he co-wrote «Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise» with the psychologist Anders Ericsson, whose studies of deliberate practice had shaped how researchers understand expert performance. The book brought that research to general readers, explaining how musicians, athletes, chess players and professionals build exceptional skill, and correcting popular simplifications such as the idea that 10,000 hours of practice alone produces mastery.

The signature

Pool works as a translator between the laboratory and the reader. He takes careful findings, keeps their caveats intact, and builds them into a narrative that a non-specialist can follow and act on. In «Peak» this means distinguishing naive repetition from purposeful and deliberate practice, and showing why mental representations, the detailed internal models experts build, are what training actually develops.

His method is skeptical without being cynical. He questions comfortable stories, whether about talent, about sex differences or about technology, and replaces them with what the evidence supports. The reader comes away with a usable principle rather than a slogan. Improvement comes from well-designed practice at the edge of one's ability, with clear goals and honest feedback.
