The story and the impact
Greg McKeown was born in London and studied at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He has spent his career advising companies and their leaders on focus, and the pattern he kept seeing there, capable people spreading themselves into mediocrity by saying yes, became the subject of his writing.
Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less (2014) argues that almost everything is noise and a few things matter enormously, and lays out a method for exploring, eliminating and executing accordingly. Effortless (2021) takes the next question: once the essential is chosen, how to make it easier to do.
He hosts a podcast on the same themes and lives in California with his family.
The signature
McKeown's signature is the trade-off made explicit: the refusal to pretend you can do it all, the ninety percent rule that treats anything short of a clear yes as a no, and the graceful no as a skill to practice. He writes in short chapters built around one idea each, which is the method applied to the book itself.
