The story and the impact

Joe Dominguez worked as a financial analyst on Wall Street in the 1960s and, by tracking his own spending and saving with unusual discipline, was able to leave paid work in 1969 at the age of thirty-one and live on the income from his savings for the rest of his life.

He developed the method he had used into a course, taught first in seminars and then as an audio programme, and with Vicki Robin turned it into Your Money or Your Life, published in 1992. He declined to take income from the book and its course, directing the proceeds to charitable foundations.

He died in 1997. The programme he built continued through Robin's later editions and through the financial independence community that grew up around the book.

The signature

Dominguez's contribution is the arithmetic: the real hourly wage, the wall chart of expenses against investment income, the crossover point. His signature is the insistence that financial independence is a calculation anyone can do, and that it is reached by needing less rather than by earning more.
