The story and the impact

Patrick Lencioni worked at Bain & Company, Oracle and Sybase before founding The Table Group in 1997, a consulting firm focused on organisational health and executive teams.

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, published in 2002, told its model as a fable about a new chief executive and her leadership team; it became one of the most widely used team books in business, followed by a field guide and assessment tools.

His later books include The Advantage in 2012, on organisational health, The Ideal Team Player in 2016, and The 6 Types of Working Genius in 2022.

The signature

Lencioni teaches through fables: a leadership team, an off-site, a crisis, and then the model the story illustrated. His signature is the pyramid, trust at the base and results at the top, and the claim that the leader goes first on every layer, beginning by admitting a mistake.
