The story and the impact
Sharon L. Lechter is an American certified public accountant whose work has centered on one question: why so many capable adults were never taught how money actually works. She came to personal finance through accounting, the discipline of reading what numbers say about a household or a business.
In 1997 she co-authored Rich Dad Poor Dad with Robert T. Kiyosaki. Her name appears beside his on the cover. She also co-founded the Rich Dad company and co-wrote further books in the series. Rich Dad Poor Dad became one of the most widely read personal-finance books of its era and drew many readers to financial literacy for the first time.
After leaving the Rich Dad organization, she continued writing and advocacy. She served on the U.S. President's Advisory Council on Financial Literacy. She also worked with the Napoleon Hill Foundation, co-writing Three Feet from Gold (2009) with Greg S. Reid and writing Think and Grow Rich for Women (2014), which carries Hill's principles to a new readership.
The signature
Lechter thinks like an accountant who wants everyone to be able to read their own books. The central tool in Rich Dad Poor Dad is a household read as an income statement and a balance sheet. In that frame, an asset is whatever puts money in your pocket and a liability is whatever takes it out. This is a standard way of reading a ledger, made personal and memorable.
Her method pairs that structure with a teacher's patience. She treats financial literacy as a skill learned early and practiced often, not a talent some people have. In her later work she pays particular attention to people who were historically left out of money conversations, especially women and young people.
