Brené Brown is a University of Houston research professor whose grounded-theory work on shame and vulnerability escaped the academy via a 2010 TEDx talk — 60 million views and counting. Daring Greatly, Atlas of the Heart, and a Netflix special followed; she remains the only researcher whose coding categories (foreboding joy, the arena) became common speech.
