The story and the impact

Peter C. Brown is a writer and novelist based in St. Paul, Minnesota. His best-known book is not fiction. In 2014 he co-wrote Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning with Henry L. Roediger III and Mark A. McDaniel, cognitive psychologists at Washington University in St. Louis. Harvard University Press published it under its Belknap imprint.

The collaboration had a clear division of labor. Roediger and McDaniel brought decades of laboratory research on memory and learning. Brown's job was to make that research usable by people outside the lab: students, teachers, coaches, corporate trainers, and anyone who has to learn for a living. He interviewed practitioners such as pilots, physicians, athletes and students, and built the book around their experiences, placing the experimental evidence alongside each story.

The book challenged study habits most people trust, including rereading, highlighting and cramming. It showed that these habits create a feeling of fluency that is easily mistaken for mastery. In their place it made the case for retrieval practice, spaced repetition, interleaving and the deliberate use of 'desirable difficulties.' Make It Stick became a standard reference in classrooms, teacher education and workplace learning, and it remains one of the most frequently recommended popular books on evidence-based learning.

The signature

Brown works like a translator who keeps the original intact. He usually opens with a person facing a real learning problem, then brings in the experiment that explains why one approach failed and another held. That order makes counterintuitive findings feel earned. Easy learning is often shallow, effortful learning tends to last, and our own sense of how well we know something is an unreliable guide.

His prose doesn't oversell. The scientists' caveats stay in, and the advice is grounded in what the studies actually tested. The book also practices what it teaches. Key ideas return across chapters in new contexts, so the reader keeps retrieving them, and the closing chapter turns the principles into concrete strategies for learners, teachers and trainers.
