The daily start ritual

The daily start ritual is the ordered sequence that opens a working day for someone who used to avoid it: last night's list and frog, the desk already set, a two-line ritual, a timer at thirty minutes, and the frog first, before email, so the morning begins with an instruction rather than a negotiation.

Procrastination is decided in the first ten minutes of the day, when there is no plan and the inbox offers itself. The ritual removes those ten minutes. It begins the evening before, with Tracy's list and Clear's environment: the frog marked, the file open, the phone elsewhere. In the morning, Newport's start ritual, the same drink, the same place, a line about what this block is for, signals that the negotiation is over; Fiore's timer sets thirty minutes; Tracy's rule puts the frog before anything easier. Pressfield's professional keeps the time whatever the mood, and Clear's never-miss-twice makes the morning after a miss the most important one. The ritual is boring on purpose. Its value is that it runs on a bad day, when nothing else would.

A real-life example

An engineer in Ankara: six-thirty, kitchen table, coffee, file already open from the night before, phone in the bedroom, a card that says 'login screen, thirty minutes'. On the Wednesday he does not feel like it the ritual carries him to the table anyway, and twenty bad lines get written.

How to use it

  1. 1Prepare the morning the night before: list, frog, desk, phone elsewhere.
  2. 2Open with the same two-line ritual every day, then a thirty-minute timer and the frog.
  3. 3Keep the time on the days you do not feel like it; those are the days the ritual is for.
