Concept
Showing up daily
Showing up daily is the professional's practice in Pressfield's account: a fixed time, a fixed place, a start ritual, and a rule that the session happens whether or not the work is good, so that attendance is never negotiated with the morning's mood and no single day counts as evidence about you.
The practice is made of boring things on purpose. The same hour, so that the decision is not remade daily. The same place, so the body recognises the work. A short ritual, coffee, the file open, the phone in another room, so the mind gets the signal that the negotiation is over. And the refusal to let one session's quality matter: the professional judges the month. Showing up on the days you do not feel like it is the only kind of day that counts as turning pro, because it is the only kind Resistance contests. James Clear's rule of never missing twice is the safety net: a missed day is information, two missed days is a new habit forming, so the day after a miss is the most important attendance of the month.
A real-life example
The engineer in Ankara keeps six-thirty at the kitchen table for a month. Two mornings he misses; on both, the following morning he is at the table with nothing to show but his attendance, which he later says was the whole point.
How to use it
- 1Fix the time, the place and a two-line ritual, and repeat them until the body starts on its own.
- 2Show up on the days you do not feel like it; those are the days that count.
- 3Never miss twice: the morning after a miss is the most important one of the month.
