Saving Without a Goal

Saving without a goal is Morgan Housel's advice to save even when there is nothing specific to save for, because savings are a hedge against a future that will surprise you and buy options and flexibility that a target-based budget cannot see.

Most people save for something: a house, a car, a wedding, retirement. Housel argues in The Psychology of Money that saving only for known goals misses the main reason to save, which is the unknown. Life will bring a job loss, an illness, a family need or an opportunity that nobody planned for, and money set aside with no label is what lets you meet it on your own terms. He makes two further points. First, the savings rate matters more than income or investment returns: you control how much you keep far more than what markets pay, and wealth is mostly the gap between what you earn and what you spend. Widening that gap often comes less from earning more than from wanting less, from keeping your ego below your income. Second, savings pay a return that shows on no statement: flexibility. The ability to wait for a better job, to take time to think, to say no, is worth a great deal in a world where so many decisions are forced by an empty account. A saving habit without a destination is not aimless; its aim is freedom of choice.

A real-life example

Melike, a teacher in Trabzon, has moved 4,000 lira a month into a separate account since 2022 with no purpose in mind, and friends kept asking what it was for. In 2025 her father needed months of care after an operation. She took ten weeks of unpaid leave without borrowing or selling anything. The account, which had never had a name, turned out to have been for exactly that.

How to use it

  1. 1Open a separate savings account and set a small automatic transfer for payday, with no target attached.
  2. 2Raise your savings rate by holding your lifestyle steady when income rises, rather than by chasing higher returns.
  3. 3Measure the account in options rather than lira: how many months it would let you wait, refuse or change course.
