The story and the impact
Barry McDonagh is an Irish author and anxiety coach whose work grew out of his own experience. As a young man he struggled with anxiety and panic attacks, and the conventional advice he found did little to loosen their grip. What finally helped went against instinct: he stopped fighting the sensations and stopped resisting them.
He went on to coach people with anxiety and created Panic Away, an online program built on that principle. His years of working with clients shaped the method he later set down in Dare: The New Way to End Anxiety and Stop Panic Attacks (2015).
Dare organizes the approach into four steps: Defuse, Allow, Run toward, Engage. It became a widely read self-help book on anxiety and panic, and a companion app and audio material later extended it so readers could use the steps in the moment.
The signature
McDonagh treats anxiety as a false alarm in the body, not an enemy to defeat. In his view the alarm grows louder the harder we push against it. His core move is the DARE response. First, defuse the spiralling "what if" thoughts with a shrug of "so what?" Second, allow the sensations to be there without fighting them. Third, run toward the fear by reframing the arousal as excitement. Finally, engage the mind fully in something in the present.
What makes the method his is its practicality and its insider's voice. He writes as someone who has felt the racing heart and the dread, not as a distant clinician. He keeps the focus on how we respond in the moment rather than on endless analysis of why the anxiety began. The message running through all of it is that a sensitized nervous system has learned a habit, and habits can be unlearned.
