The story and the impact

Rob Fitzpatrick spent his twenties building startups, including one that went through Y Combinator, and describes those years as a long lesson in asking customers the wrong questions. His companies collected enthusiasm, built on it, and discovered too late that enthusiasm and demand are different things.

He wrote The Mom Test in 2013 to fix that for other founders: a short, unacademic book of rules for conversations in which even your mother could not lie to you. It was self-published and spread by recommendation, becoming the text handed to founders before their first customer interview and a standard in accelerators and university entrepreneurship courses.

He later wrote The Workshop Survival Guide, on running sessions that teach, and Write Useful Books, on writing nonfiction that readers recommend, applying the same test-with-real-people method to teaching and writing.

The signature

Fitzpatrick writes like a friend debriefing you after a bad meeting: plain, funny, and specific about what went wrong. His signature is the rule you can remember under pressure, talk about their life, ask about the past, talk less, and the refusal to dress a practical point in theory.
