Concept
Cost of Leadership
The cost of leadership is Simon Sinek's idea that leading is a choice, not a rank: the leader accepts a cost first, in time, comfort, credit or pressure absorbed from above, so that the people in their care can feel safe.
The title of Leaders Eat Last comes from an observation Sinek credits to Lieutenant General George Flynn of the United States Marine Corps: when Marines line up for a meal, the most junior eat first and the most senior eat last. Sinek turns the custom into a definition. Authority comes with a position, but leadership is a choice open to anyone, to put the interests of the people we are responsible for ahead of our own and to pay something so that they do not have to. The cost can be time and attention, credit handed to others, comfort given up, or pressure from above that a manager absorbs instead of passing down. People learn where a leader's Circle of Safety ends by watching who pays when something goes wrong: a manager who takes responsibility upward for a team's mistake, and works through the lesson privately with the team, shows that the circle includes them. Sinek also stresses time and energy over money, because people judge care by attention they can see. The idea has a limit the book gives less weight to: a leader who pays every cost alone and never says no burns out, and a burned-out leader protects nobody. Eating last means choosing which costs to take first, visibly and sustainably.
A real-life example
When a system error sends wrong statements to a thousand customers of a bank in Eskişehir, the regional director asks who approved the letter template. The team leader answers that the approval was his responsibility and presents the fix that week, then reviews what went wrong with his team without naming anyone. The next month two agents flag template problems before they reach customers.
How to use it
- 1Decide what pressure from above to absorb before deciding what to pass down.
- 2Take responsibility upward and give credit downward in public, and review mistakes inside the team in private.
- 3Choose which costs to take first and protect personal limits, so that eating last does not become burning out.
