Concept

The referral loop

The referral loop is the built, not hoped-for, process by which a well-served customer brings the next one: ask at the moment of delight, make it easy with a sentence they can forward, thank the referrer memorably, and measure the rate. Of every ten customers, how many bring another?

Guillebeau's founders and Jarvis's practice agree that referrals can be engineered without becoming manipulative, as long as the service underneath is real. The moment matters: ask when the customer has just received the outcome, not weeks later. The ease matters: a sentence they can send to a friend, with the offer and the price in it. The thanks matters: a referrer who is remembered refers again. And the rate matters because it is the one marketing number a small business can move without spending: raising it from one in ten to three in ten doubles the business. The loop is written into the operations manual as a standard step after delivery, which is what separates it from a favour occasionally asked.

A real-life example

A clinic adds a standard message at week six and week twelve of every programme asking how the patient's back is, and, when they reply, whether they know someone with the same problem. Referrals go from four a month to eleven.

How to use it

  1. 1Ask for the referral at the moment the customer gets the outcome.
  2. 2Give them one sentence they can forward, with the offer and the price.
  3. 3Track the rate: of every ten customers, how many bring another, and raise it.
