Signature Strengths

Signature strengths are the three to five character strengths, such as curiosity, kindness or perseverance, that feel most authentically yours and energize you when you use them, which makes them the most direct route to building both character and well-being.

The idea comes from Martin Seligman and Christopher Peterson. They catalogued 24 character strengths grouped under six virtues found across cultures, from wisdom to transcendence. Everyone has all 24 to some degree, but a handful stand out. Using them feels like being yourself, you pick up related tasks quickly, and you end the day tired in a good way rather than drained. This fits the older view Jonathan Haidt revives: virtue is a trained skill, not a rulebook. Aristotle said you become brave by doing brave things, and strengths grow the same way, through practice. The best-known finding is simple. People who used one of their top strengths in a new way every day for a week reported more happiness up to six months later. The point is not to ignore weaknesses. It is to stop treating them as the only place growth can happen.

A real-life example

Maya, a payroll accountant, took the free VIA survey and found love of learning and fairness at the top. Her work felt flat, so she tested a new use each day. One morning she rewrote a confusing pay policy in plain language for colleagues. Another day she spent twenty minutes working out why overtime errors kept recurring. Same job, same desk. By Friday she noticed she was arriving curious instead of resigned.

How to use it

  1. 1Identify your top five with the free VIA Character Strengths survey. Keep only those that pass the gut test: using them feels like the real you, not a role you perform.
  2. 2Pick one signature strength and use it in a genuinely new way each day for a week, at work, at home or with a friend. The novelty keeps it practice rather than routine.
  3. 3Each evening, write one line on what you did and how it felt. After seven days, keep the uses that energized you and build them into your regular week.
