Celebration

Celebration, in BJ Fogg's method, is a deliberate flash of positive emotion in the second after you perform a tiny habit, which is what actually tells the brain to wire the behaviour in.

Fogg calls it the most important and most neglected part of Tiny Habits, and his lab's finding behind it is blunt: emotions create habits, not repetition. A behaviour followed by a feeling of success gets tagged as worth repeating; a behaviour followed by nothing, or by self-criticism, stays fragile however often it is done. The celebration has to be immediate, within seconds, and it has to be genuine for you: a quiet 'yes', a fist pump, a smile at yourself in the mirror. What people get wrong is finding it silly and skipping it, then wondering why a habit they performed for a month vanished the week they stopped forcing it. The feeling was never attached, so nothing held.

A real-life example

Ege flosses one tooth after brushing, the tiny version of a habit he has failed at for years, and says a small 'good' out loud each time. It feels absurd for a week. By the third week he is flossing all of them without deciding to, because the routine now ends in a feeling he wants back.

How to use it

  1. 1Pick a celebration that genuinely produces a flicker of pride for you; it must feel real, not performed.
  2. 2Do it within three seconds of finishing the tiny habit, every time, especially on the days it feels pointless.
  3. 3If a habit feels like a chore, shrink it until finishing it can be celebrated honestly.
