Meaning over happiness

Meaning over happiness is Frankl's reversal of the usual goal: happiness cannot be pursued, it must ensue. Aimed at directly it recedes, like sleep chased at three in the morning; it arrives as the by-product of a life pointed at something beyond the self, a task, a person, a stance toward what cannot be changed.

Logotherapy's premise is that the primary human drive is not pleasure or power but the will to meaning, and that much modern unhappiness is an existential vacuum, the Sunday-evening feeling that there is nothing one is for. The remedy is not to look inward for a feeling but outward for a task. Frankl's argument is practical as well as philosophical: people who chase the feeling of happiness watch it recede, while people absorbed in work, in someone they love or in bearing something well report it arriving unasked. Haidt's research decades later agrees on the mechanism: the durable sources of well-being are engagement, relationship and meaning, and possessions and comfort fade. The daily practice is to point the day at something rather than at feeling good, and to notice, at the end, what that did.

A real-life example

A teacher in Gaziantep, certain after her mother's death that nothing matters, points the autumn at a reading programme nobody else will run and at her father who has stopped cooking. The certainty does not survive the month, and she did not once try to be happy.

How to use it

  1. 1Stop aiming at the feeling; aim the day at a task or a person and let the feeling follow.
  2. 2On the empty Sunday evening, look outward for something to do rather than inward for something to feel.
  3. 3Judge the week by what you were for, not by how you felt.
