Attention Residue
Attention residue is the portion of your attention that stays behind on a task you have just left, degrading your performance on the next task until the earlier one's loose ends are closed.
Organizational psychologist Sophie Leroy named the effect in her 2009 research on task transitions, and Cal Newport made it one of the load-bearing arguments of Deep Work. The mechanism is plain: an unfinished task stays open, so your mind keeps running background processes on it — was that number right, what came next, did I miss something. Part of what Chris Bailey calls your attentional space is now occupied by work you are not doing. The common error is pricing an interruption by its duration: a four-second glance is not four seconds. Residue also flows both ways — the message you checked leaves its own residue on the work you returned to. The second error is treating this as a willpower problem. It is an arithmetic problem.
A real-life example
You are drafting the second section of a report. While a file uploads you check WhatsApp, and the team chat mentions something else due tomorrow. Five seconds later you are back in the document — but you have lost the thread of the sentence, and ten minutes on you are still thinking about that message. By evening you decide you couldn't focus. You could; you were just holding two half-finished tasks in one head.
How to use it
- 1Before a deep block, close the open loop instead of carrying it: write the next single action for the unfinished task in one line, give it a time, and get it off your mind — minds release scheduled tasks, not open-ended ones.
- 2Price interruptions as duration plus reload time. Say "five seconds plus fifteen minutes" out loud before you check, then decide.
- 3Make the check physically unavailable for the length of the block: phone in another room, message tabs closed. Silencing notifications is not enough — remove the option.
