Context Switching
Context switching is moving your attention from one task to another before the first is finished, which forces your mind to drop the mental context it had built and rebuild it — slower and thinner — when you come back.
The term comes from computing: a processor saves the state of one job, loads another, and pays a small cost every time. Attention researchers borrowed it because the human version works the same way, only worse. Sophie Leroy's work on attention residue showed that part of your mind keeps processing the task you left, so you arrive at the next one already partly occupied. Chris Bailey, in Hyperfocus, calls the capacity you are splitting attentional space — the limited set of things your mind can actively hold at once. What people get wrong is the arithmetic. They price a switch at its duration — four seconds for a message — and ignore reload time and the degraded thinking on both sides of the gap. That is why this looks like a discipline problem when it is really a pricing problem.
A real-life example
You are building the quarterly budget in Excel, three assumptions held in your head at once. The building's WhatsApp group pings about the elevator repair. You read it, type "tamam", and go back. The spreadsheet is still there; the three assumptions are not. Ten minutes later you are recalculating a line you had already settled — and the elevator thread is still running quietly in the background.
How to use it
- 1Before leaving a task, even for ten seconds, write one line about where you were: the next move and the number you were checking. It is the cheapest reload you will ever buy.
- 2Batch your checks. Pick two fixed times a day for messages and email, close the apps in between, and deliberately break the habit of glancing while something loads.
- 3Price your next "quick check" honestly: add at least ten minutes of rebuild time to the four seconds, then decide whether it is still worth it.
