Concept

Concreteness

Concreteness is the Heaths' trait of ideas that can be pictured: a real person answering within two rings rather than 'enhanced customer experience'. Abstractions are the language of expertise and the enemy of memory; concrete things are what a listener keeps.

Proverbs survive for centuries because they are concrete: a bird in the hand, not 'a certain gain outweighs a probable one'. The Heaths argue that concreteness is the trait most often lost as people become expert, because expertise is precisely the ability to think in abstractions, and the curse of knowledge hides the loss. Concrete language does three jobs. It is remembered, because the mind stores images and sensations far better than categories. It is understood the same way by everyone, where an abstraction is understood differently by each listener according to what they already know. And it is credible, because a specific, checkable detail is what a fabrication would not contain. The practical rule is to replace every abstract noun with the thing it refers to, and every category with an instance: not 'improved logistics' but 'the truck tells us it is late before the customer does'. Concreteness also makes coordination possible: a team told to make the product 'world class' cannot agree on what to do next; a team told that a real person answers within two rings can.

A real-life example

A hospital in Ankara replaces 'patient-centred care' in its staff briefing with three sentences: every patient is told the name of the nurse responsible for them, nobody waits more than ten minutes without being told why, and discharge papers are explained sitting down. Complaints fall within a month.

How to use it

  1. 1Replace every abstract noun with the thing it refers to, and every category with one instance.
  2. 2Test a sentence by asking whether two listeners would picture the same thing; if not, it is still abstract.
  3. 3Use concrete details to be believed as well as remembered; the checkable particular is what invention lacks.
