Privileged Moment
A privileged moment is Cialdini's term for the window just before a request in which the listener is unusually open to it, because their attention has been channelled toward whatever makes the request fit. Pre-suasion is arranging that moment honestly.
Influence described the six levers pulled during a request; Pre-Suasion is about the step before, when what the audience is attending to shapes the answer. Cialdini's claim is that whatever we focus on seems, for that moment, more important than it is, so a communicator who moves attention before making the case has already done half the work. The evidence is uncomfortable in its smallness: shoppers shown fluffy clouds on a furniture site preferred comfortable sofas, shoppers shown coins preferred cheap ones, and neither group knew why; people asked first whether they considered themselves helpful were far more willing to help a moment later. The most portable tool is the first question: before the ask, ask something whose honest answer puts the listener where the ask makes sense. Cialdini's rule for keeping it honest is that the opening question should be one you would be comfortable admitting you chose on purpose. The defence is to look, when you feel unusually open to something, at what you were shown or asked in the previous minute, and to decide later and elsewhere if the frame was borrowed.
A real-life example
Before showing the board of a family textile firm in Denizli a costly automation plan, the manager asks each member what the company will look like when their children run it, and lets the answers go round for fifteen minutes. The unchanged spreadsheet is then approved; every reader was standing in 2040.
How to use it
- 1Design the first question of your next ask: one whose honest answer puts the listener where your proposal makes sense.
- 2Look at the room before you speak; if what is on the wall or the screen frames the wrong thing, change the room or the timing.
- 3When you feel unusually open to something, check what you were shown in the previous minute before you decide.
