Uncontested Space

An uncontested space is a narrow corner of your field where few people are publishing useful work yet, so that a newcomer with steady effort can become one of the obvious names instead of one more voice among thousands.

Mark W. Schaefer pairs the uncontested space with the sustainable interest in Known: the interest is what you will talk about, the space is where you will be heard. Schaefer is known for naming content shock, the point at which the amount of material published online outgrows the time people have to read it. In a saturated subject, such as general leadership advice or broad marketing tips, a new voice has to outspend or outshout established ones, and usually cannot. The way out is to narrow. Leadership becomes leadership for first-time managers in family firms; marketing becomes marketing for dental clinics. A narrow space feels risky because it seems too small, but the arithmetic runs the other way: being among the five most useful people in a small space is worth more than being the five-thousandth in a large one, and small spaces tend to open into neighbouring ones once you are known in them. Schaefer's test is practical: search the topic and see whether the existing material is plentiful and good, or thin, dated or written for someone other than the reader you have in mind.

A real-life example

Barış, a UX designer in Ankara, had been posting general design tips for a year with little response; the subject was full of agencies and global names. Looking at his own projects, he noticed that most of them were forms: insurance claims, municipal applications, bank account openings. Almost nobody was writing about form design in Turkish. He rebuilt his newsletter around it, and within a few months a software firm that builds public-sector systems invited him to review its application screens.

How to use it

  1. 1Write down your sustainable interest, then narrow it twice: by audience, by situation or by industry.
  2. 2Search each narrowed version and judge the existing material honestly: plentiful and strong, or thin and dated?
  3. 3Pick the narrowest space in which you could name at least fifty people who need help, and state it in one sentence.
